Roofing Tips

Since the earliest days of humanity, people have sought shelter – whether as nomads moving cave-to-cave, or in settled communities building ‘roofs’ from trees, leaves and animal skin.

Today, we are lucky enough to live in an age where our roofing is built from solid, engineered resources that put up a much better fight against the wind and rain. Roofs are one of the most fundamental elements of a home, and yet, they are often the most neglected.

Implementing a few good roofing tips to look after your roof can better protect your home, add value to your property and save you from costly repairs.

Roofing Tips

  • When looking for the sources a leak, ‘think like water’ – work backwards from the drip and up the roof. Search for worn, damaged or missing shingles and corroded or poorly sealed flashings around features such as chimneys.
  • When moving around in your roof or attic, only stand on the secure frame; do not step on the insulation or ceiling.
  • Use a ladder to check gutters for clogging and damage. Always have another person spotting you and holding the ladder.
  • If your property is surrounded by trees, consider installing leaf filters on your gutters to prevent a build-up of leaves. Leaves can clog gutters and cause damage in heavy rain, or be fuel for fires when dry.
  • Consider metal roofing as a durable, fire-resistant, easily-installed and weather-tight alternative to conventional materials.
  • Keep your chimney well-maintained. Chimneys are designed to ventilate the smoke and hot gas of household fires and appliances. Poorly-maintained chimneys can become safety hazards for your home.
  • Avoid burning resinous woods – such as pine – in your fireplace. This can cause a build-up of flammable material in your chimney.
  • If you don’t feel comfortable carrying out any of these roofing tips – or simply don’t have the expertise – hire a professional. Making sure the job is done properly will extend the life of your roof, ensure your compliance with insurance policies and potentially save you thousands on costly future roof repairs.
